Espiritu Santo Dive Sites

The volcanic ridge that forms Espiritu Santo continues underwater, creating a series of submerged promontories, boulder fields, and vertical walls that host one of the Sea of Cortez's most biodiverse marine assemblages. Each espiritu santo dive site occupies a distinct ecological niche: shallow sand channels near Ensenada Grande support garden eels and juvenile rays, while the exposed pinnacles at El Bajo attract pelagic schools of jacks, tuna, and seasonal hammerheads. The park's northern boundary at Los Islotes—a pair of jagged islets—hosts a permanent California sea lion colony; underwater, the site consists of boulder swim-throughs between 5 and 18 meters, where juvenile sea lions approach divers with curiosity that borders on choreography. Dive site selection depends on operator route, weather, and certification level. La Reina, a submerged seamount east of the main island, drops to 35 meters and requires advanced open-water certification; its walls are encrusted with gorgonians and black coral, and the surrounding blue water column frequently holds silky sharks and manta rays. Closer to shore, El Corralito and Swanee Reef offer gentler profiles between 10 and 20 meters, with rocky reefs colonized by bright orange cup corals, moray eels, and dense schools of sergeant majors. Water temperature ranges from 21°C in winter to 29°C in late summer—most divers wear 5mm wetsuits year-round, upgrading to 7mm for extended winter dives. Surface intervals between dives are often spent ashore at designated beaches within the park—Playa Bonanza and Ensenada Grande—where visitors may snorkel from shore or rest under palapas. The park boundary extends three nautical miles offshore, encompassing the full suite of dive sites; entry is included in operator packages, which also cover the mandatory dive guide, tanks, weights, and park-compliant waste management.
